if you’ve been told you’re not a candidate for conventional dental implants due to moderate, advanced, or extreme bone resorption in your maxillary (upper) jaw, zygomatic implants can provide a life-changing solution. Instead of being placed in your jawbone, zygomatic implants are surgically inserted in the strong and dense zygoma bone, more commonly known as the cheekbone.
Zygoma implants are three to five times longer than conventional implant posts because the zygoma bones are located further from your gum line. The procedure doesn’t require bone grafting or a lengthy healing period, so implants can be placed immediately, and you may qualify for same-day temporary teeth.

Periodontal disease is a leading risk factor when it comes to the failure of dental implants, so your gums must be free of any signs of active disease before getting full mouth dental implants. Good oral hygiene after dental implant surgery is essential for preventing an inflammatory disease called peri-implantitis. Smoking can cause dental implant failure because it restricts blood flow to your gums and slows the healing process. Being a smoker doesn’t make you ineligible for full arch dental implants. Still, we recommend quitting several weeks before surgery until the dental implants have fused with your underlying bone (osseointegration takes three to six months). Last, although uncontrolled diabetes, osteoporosis, jaw radiation, and certain medications may not exclude candidacy for full mouth dental implants, certain precautions must be followed to ensure a successful outcome.

Dr. Hashemian has a decades-long passion for helping people restore healthy, beautiful smiles. He received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville in 1990. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Florida in 1994, followed by a medical degree at the UF College of Medicine in 1997.
Dr. Hashemian completed a general surgery internship and oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the UF Shands Hospital in Gainesville. During the six-year residency program, he received broad training in different aspects of medicine and oral surgery, including impacted canine and wisdom teeth removal, facial trauma, orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, dental implants, facial aesthetic surgery, benign and malignant pathology of the head and neck, and craniofacial surgery.
